I got a book called "Java over Java" (bad joke, good book), it's an older one, about 3 years old, but worked great. I got it off of Amazon. I learned in a couple days really well, I only did it cause I needed to for work, but then I ended up reading more since it was so easy to understand. Also, try taking a college course at your local community college, I have taken several one night a week classes, they only cost like $30 and teach you everything! They're open to all ages and skill levels.

Java Books For Beginners

I would also recommend Deitel's Java: How to Program book. They have 2 versions: Late Objects and Early Objects. Get the Early Objects version. It not only talks about Objects in an earlier chapter (as the description says), but it's a fuller expansion of the book too. This is a great book if you really want to study Java. It's very comprehensive teaching you all the basics for beginners to more advanced topics. But it's also very dry because it's designed to be a college textbook. You'll get a log of exercises to practice with, but many people don't like to spend time to study a technical book from front to back. If that's not your thing and want to start with something less intimidating, the other end of the spectrum I'd recommend is O'Reilly's Head First Java. It has a lot of drawings and pictures giving real world examples to help you learn, so it's a very fun book to learn from. It may not be as indepth as How to Program, but it covers all the basic and more advanced topics in a very approachable manner for anyone.

If you even did not know the abc's of programming, then it could be a tought job for you...

But see, learning a language is not that much difficult, specially java.

Be sure to do all the practicals, that are in the book...

You may use any book or online tutorials on java, but if you say best book,

according to me it is

Java - Complete Reference by Herbert Schildt.

It is availabe in india, at most of the book stores.

My first Java book was Java Black Book, it was really easy to understand but you do need some basic programming lessons, I recommend to take a programming class it would be a hole lot easier.

Good luck

Java has become bery complicated and it needs proper class room training. Books will not help much and you will get bored.
