I had Avast antivirus but decided to change to AVG and try it out. When I set it up I noticed I couldn't watch online movie trailers without it cutting in and out. I went to Broadband Speed Test page and I noticed that AVG cut my ping time down from 1.5 GPS to 450 kbps. Just to make sure that AVG was the problem I exited out of AVG and tested several times and each time I tested without AVG my ping would go way back up to 1.5 to 2 GPS. Im back with AVAST now and my ping stays 1.5 to 2 GPS. If anyone else tries this let me know how yours did

Hi, I have a router with a built in SPI firewall and also use a software firewall. Most of the programs I use on the Internet open ports locally, but my firewall(s) keep these ports closed to the Internet.

However when I run PPStream (which is a program that streams video via P2P) it opens a port and this port is open locally and to the Internet as well.

With this port open to the Internet will hackers be able to get on my computer even though I am using the open port?

If I turn SPI mode on will that stop hackers from using the open port?

I could really do with the whole Internet securith thing explained in laymans terms so as I know whether to worry or not, and if anyone knows of a website or book that does this it would be much appreciated.

Thanks In Advance

Alright, I think a hacker hacked into my laptop.. o.o

3 months ago, I was using my toshiba laptop one day and I was a download-junkie. Downloading random stuff for either, music or security. Anyways, the problem is that..
The last thing I remember is, I downloaded Internet Explorer 7, and I use Windows XP, anyways.. after that, there's this error from "Mcafee Anti-Virus" program that I downloaded saying, "Located Nod32 virus" or something like that, anyways.. when i wanted to scan my computer with mcafee, i think my trial ended. So, i downloaded another anti-virus program (Forgot what it was) and scanned my computer.. and there were alot of stuff but i don't think it was viruses.. it said files like "boot.xfl" or "startup" something like that. I mean alot.. after it finished scanning, IT DELETED ALL MY FILES AUTOMATICALLY and I think that my laptop Shut down and when i open it back up.. it just asks for a username & pw. my LAPTOP ISN'T SET LIKE THAT.

Whats the problem?!

I've used Sunbelt-Kerio firewall on my Windows XP system. Now, I am using Windows Vista on my new notebook. Unfortunately, Sunbelt-Kerio firewall does not support Windows Vista. I've tried to install ZoneAlarm Free Edition 7.1.0 but my computer crashed during the installation process. Any recommendations on a free firewall which supports Windows Vista.
