Norton antivirus deletes viruses, depending on the severity. If it cannot be "healed," then you have the ability to quarantine the virus or delete it totally from your system. However, if you delete, you might be breaking some sort of software agreement with program, invalidating that program. But, whoever thought of downloading a program that gives you viruses? If you want to be safe, then quarantine it and remove it at a later date if you are sure that it will be okay.

BOTH - it attempts to actively monitor your system and PREVENT viruses but should one get on your system, it will "Attempt" to remove it.
This can only be done automatically IF Norton already knows how to remove that SPECIFIC virus.
Think of it like a Doctor... Doctors can only heal you if A) they know for sure WHAT you are sick with AND B) the medical community has a proven process to fix that disease.
Sometimes Norton can identify that your computer HAS a virus and even know it by name, but DOES NOT have an automated process to fix it.
In the latter case, Norton will attempt to "quarantine" or move the file to a safe location where it can't harm your computer. so your computer has the virus but will not exhibit any problems.
