Yes, it is easy for any employer to find out. They might not know how to, but it is EASY.

Get back to work.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

If you are using the employer's network, then yes they can see everything you are doing. Depending on how much your company cares is a different story. The IT staff can tell what computer visits what site just by monitoring network traffic. As you go up the monitoring capabilities, they can tell who was logged into a particular PC and reference it with your online activities. They can tell if you download/upload information as well. If they scan the PCs (either remotely or a locally installed "service") they can tell what you have installed and manage applications based on company policies. You can have more extreme monitoring too if the company needs to do it.

Oh, as for clearing your history, they already know where/what you were doing. Deleting will only slightly cover your tracks anyway. Common disk recovery software (free software online or you can buy from a local computer shop) allows recovery of deleted files too.

Generally though, as long as you are only casually using the company resources for personal use, most are OK with it. When you do things that are offensive (i.e. visiting inappropriate sites, posting comments that offend, etc...), they may take action against you based on what they log. Most of the monitoring is outside your control done at the network level (generally secured away in some server room or network closet) so don't think just clearing logs at your PC will hide your activities.

I work with a computer guru. Thankfully, he's okay with me chatting and surfing the net (to an extent). He understands chat devices and the internet. As long as I'm not surfing on porn (something I'd never do anyway), and attracting harmful viruses, then it's fine.

As well, he has told me that any information on a computer is recoverable. Just because you've deleted it in the recycle bin doesn't mean it's permanently gone. There are extremes such as CSI's for the computer, but that's generally done in cases with fraud, etc.

When you are at work your employer has the right to check *anything* on your computer. Doesn't matter if it's your web surfing history or files.

Be careful what you do online.

Most employer and schools now employ the service of an IT professional or they do it themselves, to monitor internet usage. So be careful deleting does not mean erasing, if some one like an It professional uses simple software recovery tools he can extract exactly what you have been doing on the internet.

Absolutely no doubt. They can and do.

They can track this at the router, through a network monitor, using SNMP. They can remote monitor your computer, without asking you...yes. However, most companies tell you their policy upfront and make you sign it.

Me, I don't type anything or access any webpage that I wouldn't want my employer to see.

Chances are, nobody in your company has the time to spy on you just to spy on you. They probably only do those kind of things when they have suspicion of wrong doing or they she that you are taking up too much network resources.

Also, it's very very very easy for companies to know what programs you have installed and how, why, and when you use them.

yes. There are tools available that they can put on the network to track every website you go to, how much time you spend on the websites, etc. In addition, the tools can classify the websites in a certain way so a report can be generated to show chat rooms, IM activity, shopping sites, etc.

absolutely they can find out every site that has been visited from your computer. it doesn't matter if you delete your history. all your traffic goes through servers/routers that your company uses to connect to the internet. (you are on a corporate network.) and all those packets you send are registered with the network, along with their origin and destination. there is nothing you can do to keep them from knowing what you do on your work computer. which is, after all, a corporate asset.

Yes many employers, like mine, monitor which sites you visit.

Here it's only stuff like myspace that puts up a red flag. Most other sites could be for "research" purposes.

I used to work at a place that used key loggers. I don't know why because they didn't mind what you did on the internet.
