A notice from AVG has come on my pc telling me that the 7.1 edition will cease to be after Jan 15th, 2007. Does this mean there will be no free edition of the new one available? Is this applying just to me or has everyone got this notice? I've found the AVG free very good. Assuming this applies to everyone, what should our next step be?

I got this e-mail from my ITS

Please be advised to “not” open any Microsoft Word Document Attachments sent to you via email whether it be from an internal or external address to prevent any harm to your system or the Universities Network. If you have any questions, please contact the ITS Helpdesk.

Eweek.com is reporting a new Microsoft Word zero-day attack underway. Microsoft issued a security advisory to acknowledge the unpatched flaw, which affects Microsoft Word 2000, Microsoft Word 2002, Microsoft Office Word 2003, Microsoft Word Viewer 2003, Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac and Microsoft Word 2004 v. X for Mac. The Microsoft Works 2004, 2005 and 2006 suites are also affected because they include Microsoft Word. Simply opening a word document will launch the exploit. There are no pre-patch workarounds or anti-virus signatures available. Microsoft suggests that users 'not open or save Word files,' even from trusted sources."

My Symantic Anti-virus detected a threat today but was unable to clean it or quarantine it ("failed"). The file is called "uus.dll" and it's in my system32 folder in Windows. What is this? Is it serious? The threat type was "Downloader." What does that mean and why is my anti-virus unable to do anything about it? It says "status: infected."

Wtf is going on? o___o

I don't know what or how this happened, but at least two different programs are telling me, by messages and/or error codes, that I do not have the proper registry permissions. In one case, the program crashes. In another program, it stops with a "cannot read memory" error (but the error code is "insufficient permissions").

I am the only user on my PC, and I have admin authority. I went through the registry and made sure that my account had ALLOW and READ permissions for everything, as far as I can see. I am
running Windows XP SP2 Home. I don't know what else I can try. I've looked everywhere.

Anybody?

Thanks...

Andy
