Software are released periodically with updates to the existing versions. Support for older versions are gradually phased out. Anti-virus programs are no different. The latest version of AVG free edition is 7.5.432 ( I use it).
To upgrade, follow either of these ways:
1) Update your existing AVG install - right click on the AVG icon in your system tray (near the clock, if you don't know where the systray is) and select "check for updates". Follow the on-screen instructions.
2)Complete uninstall and reinstall - You can download the latest version of AVG from either the grisoft website (http://www.free.grisoft.com) or CNet's http://www.download.com. Before you install it, you will have to uninstall your existing version, to be on the safe side. You can uninstall AVG from Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and select remove after clicking on AVG. You will get some warnings from windows that your PC does not have anti-virus turned on. Don't worry. After AVG is gone, install the new package you downloaded earlier.
Now, you are protected against the latest virus threats. Personally, I would just do the upgrade (first method).
Hope this helps.

Ad-Aware is an anti adware, AVG is an anti virus and you need both not one or the other!
AVG will still have a free version, you can download it now. Uninstall the old one then re-install the new.
The link is in the first couple of posts.

Good news. It is still FREE!
Go to the AVG website and download the new version. I think it is version 7.5
To upgrade your current version, select repair when installing
I've been very satisfied with version 7.1 and the new 7.5.

Yes, I have also seen. Better to look for some alternate antiviruses. I can give a few links that offer free virus and spyware removers...! Norton, AVG , Avast are free antivirus software. Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html

IF you want to use it, get the newer "free" version.
Download to your computer.
Install, update ,run, AND THEN REMOVE; but SAVE the download.
I have a 2Ghz system with 1Gb RAM, and I found that if the AVG is running, it SLOWED DOWN my Internet access by almost 10%!!

I'm still on 7.0 but updated every week. . I had the message a long time ago. I contacted them and it just means that all NEW downloads will be 7.2 or later - the message is really aimed at freeware carriers. They aslo told me this if I ever had any problems to just do a re-load.
