UNIX is an Operating System like Microsoft Windows. It is a proprietery software. So, to use UNIX in your computer, you should pay money to the UNIX selling company and get the CD from them and then only you can work with it.UNIX is used in research organisations and educatinal institutions, it is not mainly used in home purpose.
LINUX is also an Operating System like Microsoft Windows. It is available free of cost in the internet. Linux is free in the sense that, the source code is freely available and the freely available Linux has only minimal features in it. So inorder to use LINUX fully with many features you should pay money and buy a FLAVOUR of linux like RED HAT LINUX, GENTOO LINUX, UBUNTU LINUX, etc.
UBUNTU is a flavour of LINUX. It is proprietery and you should pay and use it. It has some extra features and facilities compared to the freely available LINUX in internet.
