No, Internet Explorer does the opposite of protect you. A lot of malware will use IE as its infection point. An alternative browser is Mozilla Firefox - it is free to download.
Norton AntiVirus should work - assuming you keep it up to date (every 4 hours is OK).
You can always try SuperAntiSpyware - there is a free version, but the pay-for version is much better.
Sophos anti-virus is also very good, as are the products from F-Secure.

Internet Explorer is not a protective software.
Get and add AVG antivirus, it's free and effective.
get AVG at http://free.grisoft.com
also get AdAware SE. It's also free, or you can purchase a supported version for about $25 US
get AdAware at http://www.lavasoft.de

I've been using Norton for a few years and found that while it may detect potential viruses, it has problems cleaning many of them. Check with your ISP for free anti-virus software. Many ISPs offer it free to their subscribers. (Comcast provides McAfee at no cost).

Norton is not the best, I have been very happy with Avast 4.7 home Edition (FREE) for over four years. You might like to consider Zone Alarm (FREE) firewall. A google should find them.

AVG FREE anti-virus from www.grisoft.com (don't use alternatives).
Almost any anti-ad software for other rubbish SKYBOT is good..
Mozilla Firefox WILL NOT protect you and I know a number of people who have other niggling problems with it. I use Deepnet Explorer for my browser.
