As you dont know what type of person has the computor before you. How do you know when you purchase a second hand computor that there is no junk/illegal things on it? Is there anyway of checking or having it cleaned so its a new computor in your name?

my pc is protected by AVG and on the last scan told me that I have 5 infected files..which it says are imbedded in the archive, and one trojan in there somewhere as well. AVG does not give me a way to get them out of there and I don't know how to do it otherwise. I am SO not techno savvy about this sort of thing and I need HELP.. NOW!! If you can help me with this, you won't only get the 10 points for best answer, but you will have my UNDYING gratitude for LIFE!! PLEASE explain it VERY simply for my un-techno brain to comprehend.. I am an English major.. NOT a computer engineer.. PLEASE and THANK YOU.

I purchased my eMachines with Windows XP already installed in a sealed container from Wal-Mart in January of 2004. Just recently I rebooted it and a window popped up and said that my copy of windows xp may be counterfeit. There was also a box that asked if I wanted to check the authenticity of the software or resolve later. Is this a virus that is going around? It's pretty weird that all of a sudden after 2 1/2 years a message pops up to tell me my OS software is bogus.

I noticed transmission and receiving on both D-Link and cable modems frequently. Usually I find that McAfee is being updated, and sometime Dell and Microsoft.
The cable company provides spyware filtering, and anti virus checks.
But watching the modems transmit and receive persistently without me doing anything - I need a software or some advice about monitoring what is going on inside my PC and laptop (I have three computers networked to the D-Link wireless router).
I have kept all sensitive information off line on the CD, but this is very inconvenient. So I would like to ensure that my PC has not been compromised.
What can you suggest? What software is available?
Where do I get the tools I need to monitor what is happenning?
Thank you.
