I think you pretty much answered your own question here. Since a Popup is neither a virus nor a security threat it wont activate the program to stop it. Unforunately popups are only a pain in the butt they are generally Harmless java codes placed on websites, but if you are getting them while not actively searching the web the odds are that you have spyware or adware. Adaware by lavasoft and spybot search and destroy are two of the best programs I have found to get rid of them and yes you will need both since they search for different kinds of programs. After that there are also popup blockers you can get many of which are free, if you use google or yahoo toolbar they have a built in popup blocker that you can activate.

Well, I guess you need to know the difference between a virus and a pop up. A virus is a program that is written by a programmer to make your computer do something that it isn't supposed to be doing, basically. They come in different degrees of intensity from low to medium to high risk threat. And, they also come in different forms like the Trojans who come in inside the "belly" of something else, like the historical Trojans did in the Trojan Horse of legend. Then you have the Trojan horses themselves, that carry a lot of Trojans! You also have "worms" that burrow into your systema dn even go into the network itself!

Now, your anti-virus is, basically aimed at stopping the literally tens of thousands of these!

There's a lot you can learn about the virus myths from vmyths [I've provided the link in the "Source list" below which will help you clarify a lot of the myths about computer viruses.

However, a pop up, usually, is really quite a harmless thing with just a nuisance value. You can easily stop the incidence of this by enabling the pop up blocker that comes inbuilt in most tool-bars of browsers.

Just in case that you might need to really learn how you can do this with the pop up blocker provided by microsoft itself in your Internet Explorer, I've included the link to the web page that shows you how to do this in easy to follow steps!

You might also want to download either Yahoo toolbar or Google toolbar, which I would reccommend, though there are quite a few available freely; because these come with in-built pop up blockers.

I do hope this helps clarify matters and wish you all the very best!

Cheers!

Rammy.

An anivirus program doesn't block popups for that you need a popup stopper, blocker or killer. I use PopUp Killer, it's free, you can get it at:

Go to that address and choose one.
