You can also see what software is running on your system, and what is set to run at start up. If it isn't windows critical (svchost, etc.) and you didn't install it, it probably shouldn't be in start up.
To see what programs load at start up: Start Menu->Run-> (type) msconfig

I once had this happen when cell phones were getting popular about 5 years ago & my next door neighbor & her boyfriend were hacking into the phone & blocking & sending info to my screen. It only happened when I used the battery, so I started to plug it into the wall & this made it harder for them to hack me! The symptoms were "glitches" that occured only when certain letters appeared on the screen & the info that I was trying to text would end up saying something other than what I had actually typed in! The good people at T-Mobil helped me to trouble shoot the problem & trap the people. They were part of a larger group who eventually just scattered when they found out they were made! I assume that hard-line computers have similar problems.

Install a proper firewall & disable your windows firewall & instruct your firewall to clear its actions from you. As soon as someone tries to hack into your system you will receive an alarm telling you about it .

You will need a personal firewall (as previously stated). A quality and free firewall is zonealarm from zonelabs [ http://tinyurl.com/1ise ].

When my AVG instantly alerts me to a virus or dialer trying to wriggle it's way in my PC, that's my signal to have it successfully remove/clean the nasty attempt up....and AVG's never failed me yet.
