I received a junk mail from someone I knew. Just opening
that email ( not the attchment ) apparently added me to some
email list and sent that junk mail to people I know. How can
this happen and how to avoid it?

It sounds like you were a victim of a Worm or Trojan. There have been exploits in Yahoo! Mail in the past but they were fixed. Please refer to the "Yahoo fixes Web mail security flaw" -- article "(http://news.com.com/Yahoo+fixes+Web+mail+security+flaw/2100-1002_3-5907383.html)

I recommend you scan your computer for any virus, spyware, worm and/ or Trojan. If you don't have a security utility then you can download and install a number of free security tools. You can download them from: http://www.filehippo.com/software/antispyware/

Be sure to download: Ewido, Spybot and Ad Aware.

If you need a antivirus program then you can download one from: http://www.filehippo.com/software/antivirus/

CNET's Download.com website has a number of tutorials on how to use these tools. The download link is: http://www.download.com/Security-Spyware/2001-2023_4-0.html?tag=dir

This is a common thing that can't be stopped. The opening of emails, especially if they have Graphics, confirms your email address to the sender. Then they sell your email address to spammers for a goodly amount of money.

These kind of activities can be reported to the FTC. They do go after and presecute these people. Go here to file a complaint:

Remember, only Liberals claim that other should do for you. The reality of the Real World is different. If you want to be protected then learn what you have to do to protect yourself.
