when i switch on it boots up and all the icons come on screen. Then the egg timer thing, then nothing else happens, even after 2 hours.the start menu wont come up. the mouse still moves.
I've pressed ctrl alt delete with no joy, also turned it of by the button,. Can anyone advise?

geek squad cannot answer this. i am able to send from my yahoo account to my own excite account, but i cant send to anyone else i from either account, like i said the laptop, which im using now, has windows vista, the desk top has windows xp. need to know if vista is the cause and how do i fix it?????

This problem is getting to be ridiculous. I am currently on a college campus where the college provides each student with a laptop- my class got the R40s. Also, we have an IBM repair shop onsite for the school. The repair shop has no idea why my computer keeps turning off randomly. Their scanners aren't picking anything up, but they have seen the problem happen. They already replaced the system board once, have removed all of the software on it and reloaded all the basics onto it several times, and have taken it apart and cleaned it. They are still coming up dry. They have also confirmed that I am not the one causing the problem. It happens most often when I am playing a computer game or surfing the internet. There is no warning what so ever, it simply shuts off completely- the screen just goes black. It isn't the battery either. Any thoughts as to what might be causing this problem?

I am trying to install Nero 7 premium onto a vista os, however it almost finished on the instyallation screen getting to the 'registering modules' stage before displaying the error message that states that the program is unable to continue. Any ideas? help!!

My HP pavillion notebook within the 1yr warranty period was sent to canadian service center with overheating issues. They changed the Fan unit and the Mother board. When I recieved the machine I was surprised that they have not replaced the original mother board of Hp Pavillion since they confirmed they don't have in stock and is on back order ,but replaced it with a Compaq Presario motherboard. Now when I restart my machine it shows a Compaque logo ,the help center page shows it is a compaque Presario total care page they have flashed the BIOS to make it look llike Pavillion removed the Product no..
I had to send the machine to them 3 times and it is almost 6 weeks now . They have eaten up my warranty of 6 weeks although I was told they will repair within 3-5 days.Despite complaints to repair center, arguing with case manager ,writing to CEO about the whole issue , they don't care and don't reply.Please suggest what should I do?Is a legal notice only option? Thanks

I'm not sure as to which is a better deal (if there is a huge difference b/t the AMD 64 X2 and the Core 2 Duo, b/t the Nvidia Geforce Go 6150 and the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, if the high-def screen on the HP is worth it, etc.)

Both fit within my budget so the extra $50 for the HP is not a problem, I'm just curious as to which is the better laptop overall.

I am having trouble with my DVD-RW drive on my laptop. Here's the problem. After inserting a blank dvd or cd in my drive, the drive reads CD drive instead of DVD-RW drive. When I right-click and go to properties, it says it is a dvd-r disc, but it has 0 bytes of free space and 0 bytes of used space. If I double click on the CD Drive, I get a message that says "DLA cannot use this blank media until it has been formatted. Would you like to format this media now?" If I click yes, it tries to format and then gives me a fatal write error.

What does DLA mean? When I checked the driver details i found that the driver was dated 2001. Would updating the driver fix this? If so, how do I update the driver?

I have a IBM Selectric II typewriter that has been stored for about 18 years. It was working when I stored it. I pulled it and tried to type but it is very stiff. Will only tab but will not return when the return button is pushed. Just a little gear starts running and clicking like crazy. Also, the letters will not type. The selectric ball looks good and it seems as though there is still a lot of oil/grease on it. Any suggestions as to what may be the main problem and how to fix. Could it be the typewriter ribbon holder. The back button won't work either. Could it just be a matter of needed greased/cleaned up. Don't want to spend a fortune on it. Thanks.
