It's normally not too difficult to install memory in a laptop depending on the maker. The first thing I would recommend is finding out if its it will handle 1GB of RAM. The next thing would to to determine what is installed now; do you have one stick of 512k or do you have two sticks of 256k. If you have two sticks of 256k both would have to be replaced in order for you to jump up to 1GB or RAM; this would be more costly. However if you have 512k already you could simply add another stick. Prices vary check with your laptops manufacturer on how much can be put in the unit and what type its using first.

It depends on the laptop, and what kind of memory it uses.
You should probably take it to someone to help decide what it needs (you don't necessarily have to buy from them, just find out what the deal is).
If your computer has empty slots, you can add more memory - if the slots are full, you might have to replace some of the smaller memory sticks with bigger ones. That will decide the end cost.
For example, if you have four memory slots, and each one has a 128 megabyte stick, you have a total of 512 meg, but no empty slots. If you have two slots, and one of them has a 512 meg stick, then all you have to do is find another 512 meg stick that is the same.

First of all what kind of Laptop is it? Look on your manufactures website to see what type of RAM it takes and see how much they want for it. Then look on ebay and find out if you can find it there cheaper, Installation is easy, there should be a panel in the bottom of the laptop, that'll be marked, just make sure you have it facing the right direction (should only fit in one way anyway) most laptops only have two slots for ram.

depends on what kind of ram you machine takes and the speed of the ram. DDR2 is typically more expensive than DDR and the price goes up the faster the speed of course.
How many slots do you have available? (usually one or two)
you should be able to find a gig of ram (one stick) for about 100 bucks or less depending on the type of ram and speed you choose.
hard to give exact figure without knowing type and speed though.

You could check with this website for both answers, and NO this is not an affiliate link, just a regular link, but a very helpful website! It has a download for testing your computer for the EXACT memory needs (specific to YOUR computer), and also a very helpful HELP section, good luck! :)
