ive tried a cleaning disc and everything works fine on dvds.Is there any settings to adjust or is it broke?ive only used it to burn cds a few times?any help please?

Try opening Device manager on your computer and see if any of the things are in yellow. If so reinstall the drivers for that hardware.
If not could be something more detailed.

A lot of questions to ask first. Did it read cds before and then just stopped reading them? Then after cleaning disc still does not work. Apparently drive has failed for whatever reason.

If you bought laptop used, and it will not read the cds, then if it is an old one, it may only read one type of cd. Example, it may have a +r/w drive than only reads or writes to + cd disks only. If you stick a -cd disk in it will not read it. And the reverse holds true.

Is the laptop still under warranty? Also if not, and you need to get another one shop wisely. Do not get the DL drive unless you wish to spend $6 US, for one DVD disk. A regular DVD may run only $0.40 in bulk, so you can see the price difference.
