This problem is getting to be ridiculous. I am currently on a college campus where the college provides each student with a laptop- my class got the R40s. Also, we have an IBM repair shop onsite for the school. The repair shop has no idea why my computer keeps turning off randomly. Their scanners aren't picking anything up, but they have seen the problem happen. They already replaced the system board once, have removed all of the software on it and reloaded all the basics onto it several times, and have taken it apart and cleaned it. They are still coming up dry. They have also confirmed that I am not the one causing the problem. It happens most often when I am playing a computer game or surfing the internet. There is no warning what so ever, it simply shuts off completely- the screen just goes black. It isn't the battery either. Any thoughts as to what might be causing this problem?

Hey,

There are five main reasons why a computer will reboot. Driver issues, faulty psu (or battery in your case), faulty memory, over heating, viruses ad/spy/malware.

Go into your Device Manager and make sure there are no little yellow blips with an exclamation point next to it. If there is, update the drivers for that particular item. If that doesn't fix it, it might be your memory.

Go to memtest.org. Download their tool and follow their instructions to load it on to a bootable media. This will test your RAM and make sure it's good. Let a scan like this run overnight while you're sleeping. If it comes back with errors, then your memory is the culprit. Luckily, RAM on laptops is easy to replace.

It's possible you're picking up viruses, but if you've reformatted and reinstalled the OS this likely isn't your problem. However, it doesn't hurt to pick up some scanners and check twice.

Regards,

Brandon

My girlfriends laptop does the same thing when its not plugged in and running off the battery. The battery is just old and doesn't hold a charge well. The computer says the battery has juice but it still shuts off. Does your computer do it when its plugged in? If not, it is probably just a faulty battery. If you are still under warranty get a new one.

More than likely its overheating. Buy an air tray for it.
