Here's my problem...I have recently been having quite random troubles with my laptop computer. It started when I tried to turn it on a few weeks ago and it would power on but the screen would remain black. About one out of 50 tries or so it would actually boot. To resolove this I decided to reinstall Windows and format the hard drive when I was able to get it up. When I tried to install my copy of XP that came with the computer I got some error right at the start which I didn't write down, and now i wish I had. Anyways, I tried a different copy and that installed fine. After Windows was done installing I began reinstalling software, and I frequently have been getting errors saying the file may be corrupted. Not just one file either, almost everything I install. Some of it I can just try again and it works, some I will continue to get the same message. My best guess is bad sectors on my hard drive, but I want to be sure before replacing it. Anyone have a better guess?

I came to US from abroad to study, I've Dell Latitude, without in-built modem, I just insert it in thin slot from the side of computer. At home abroad I use dial up plugging another end of modem cord into tel. socket, but this end is not CAT type, but old one with 5 small salient rods. How can I manage to connect to ADSL?

I recently had a perfectly functioning powerbook g4 12" apple laptop. About 3 months ago, I purchased a new battery, which ended up being one of the batteries that was recalled. I had noticed the battery was warmer than my old battery, but thought nothing of it. About a week ago, all the sudden, my computer froze (gasp!). This had never happened before, but when I tried to start it up, the computer was dead, and couldn't read the hard drive.

About two days later, the battery recall notice hit the news. I sent for my new battery, which is on the way. Could this logic board failure be the fault of a defective battery? If so, would apple replace it for free?

Yep, the little angel (ahem..) thought he was helping by cleaning daddys laptop. He's sprayed the TFT screen and it looks like the "Pledge" funature polish has marked it. Any suggestions on how to recover the situation? Oh and yes, he's been grounded until he's seven!!! LOL.

was on the internet last night and my laptop (dell inspiron e1505) suddenly stopped and a blue screen came up with white words that said something about a memory parity error. i couldn't restart my computer because the whole system had been halted. i finally got it going again by unplugging it and taking the battery out, then putting it back in again. i thought it was all better, but then it just happened again! I did the battery thing again, but this time i left the computer off, because if it happened twice, it'll happen again and it my hurt my laptop to restart a lot. so anyway, can you please tell me what might be wrong and how i can fix it? thank you!!!

Uh oh! The most stupid and unfortunate thing has happened. I accidentally knocked my notebook against a sharp metallic object. Of all the places, it pierced my screen and broke it. So, I can't use it now.

I think repairing it will be extremely costly. However, I also can't throw it away. I just got it for about US$1200 not long ago.

I am just thinking. Do you think the screen can be replaced? Is there a place that sells plain LCD screens for notebooks? Can I just buy one such screen and replaced it?

If you know of such shops selling such screens, may I know what kind of shops are they? I don't believe ordinary computer shops sell them.

I'm in computer sales and supplies here in NIgeria. My aim is to buy fairly used laptops, particularly the Pentiums I and II, (and III, IV of course) for re-sale in Nigeria. The use of desktops have been hampered by the erratic power supply here. So we are trying to encourage the use of laptops.

My Dell Latitude C600 won't boot Windows anymore, says that it's missing the hal.dll file. Unfortunately the modular cd drive in the laptop no longer works for some reason and a new one is coming in. I wonder if I can use the new drive to boot the Windows CD or am I out of luck there because drivers need to be installed?

How different are the components used in a desktop, the laptop and the notebook?

Does a notebook use the same type of motherboard used in a desktop? Does it also used the same type of Pentium processor or hard disk, etc?
