I have an Advent laptop from PC World. It's really good and you can get different models for around the £300 mark. My mum also has an Advent desktop and we have had no problems with either. It's not a widely known brand like Apple or Dell, but owing to the publicity they have had lately I'd saty away from them!

Your question is vague. It depends on what you want the laptop to do. It's like asking, "what's the best automobile?". Well, a lorry or truck might be great for carrying a ton of gravel home, but it won't do very well in a race.
Your best bet is to first decide what you want the laptop to do. Is it for word processing, internet access, video editting? Then look for a computer magazine that has side by side comparisons of laptops, and see what they rate them for. If the magazine doesn't have a comparison that month, check their website.

I don't think you'll get anything any good for £300,if you can afford £399 Woolworth's has one for that amount, its half price,it comes with a dvd re writer and windows media centre, which means you can watch tv record tv pause live tv etc,ive had one and its a very smart laptop.

any laptop under £300 will be a bad investment,it will have inferior graphics and sound and the memory will be around 256mb which is paltry
for a few hundred pound more you can buy a very good laptop from http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODUCTVIEWPAGE&USG=PRODUCT&ENT=PRODUCT&KEY=60363
this has a 80gb hard drive and 1gb of memory,a bargain at the price, mesh have a excellent after-sales service, and the warranty can be on-site

I'm no computer expert, but with my own experience, don't get an emachine or DELL. HP pavilion or toshiba are the way to go. and possibly an APPLE. Does that help at all? SOrry if it didin't help at all.
