My Dell Latitude C600 won't boot Windows anymore, says that it's missing the hal.dll file. Unfortunately the modular cd drive in the laptop no longer works for some reason and a new one is coming in. I wonder if I can use the new drive to boot the Windows CD or am I out of luck there because drivers need to be installed?

the replacement drive is a cd-rw/dvd combo that Dell used to manufacture and sell directly from their site for the C series...now only dell resellers have them....so it is a dell part that Dell themselves used to sell off their site...

CD functions will be plug and play, but the CDR or CDRW may need additional drivers. Onceyou have your OS working properly, install any driver which come wit the drive.

If it says that " hal.dll " file is missing then it has more problems then your broken CD-ROM Drive itself. Indeed if you connect it properly and all that you can re-install Windows over the existing Windows. This is called a " Dirty Install " it it should work. Unless and until the new CD-Rom Drive that you are getting is a very exotic kind I do not think that there will be any issues or requirements of any extra drivers to re-install Windows using the Windows CD.

Drivers usually don't need to be installed to make it work. To get that you can put on easy put one that you can attach to the usb. I have one like that when mine died.
