Does a notebook use the same type of motherboard used in a desktop? Does it also used the same type of Pentium processor or hard disk, etc?

No, the notebook components are engineered for small chassis so it won't fit/interchange. Few components from notebook can indeed go into desktop via specialized adapters.

Those that have such specialized adapter: HD and PC Card.

No, desktop and laptop components are different. If you buy components made for a laptop and try to put them into a desktop you will either get an error and worse fry your motherboard.
