I came to US from abroad to study, I've Dell Latitude, without in-built modem, I just insert it in thin slot from the side of computer. At home abroad I use dial up plugging another end of modem cord into tel. socket, but this end is not CAT type, but old one with 5 small salient rods. How can I manage to connect to ADSL?

hi,

When you want DSL internet connection, you need to have a built-in network jack, or you need a PCMCIA network card (often called PC network card. You also need a special cable called CAT5 network cable.

You also need to have access to DSL service. You can arrange that by calling the phone company, or several other companies, depending on you location here in the US. earthlink.com is one, look at http://www.earthlink.com . This will cost $20 per month and up. If you have roommates, you can share one DSL connection.

Where the DSL service enters the building (or apartment), there will be a device called a DSL modem. Often, if there is just one user, the computer will be connected directly to the DSL modem.

However, if there is more than one user, you can buy a small router (maybe 5 port). Then you can plug up to 5 devices into the DSL line, without anyone's usage being degraded.

I hope this helps. Email me if you have more questions. Good luck!

What you have bought sounds like a Network card... sounds like you need a DSL Modem (from the phone company)... The DSL Modem connects to the Phone jack, and then you can connect the Network card on your Laptop to the DSL Modem with the CAT cable

Unless you have a Cat 5 adaptor for the card, you probably can't. For around $40 US you should be able to purchase a new card that is Ethernet.
