I was going through the internet when I came upon this crazy of having (again) a desktop computer again with these specs:

PC/AT with flip-top casing
120 MB HD
1 5.25" floppy disk drive & 1 3.5" floppy disk drive
the OS is MS-DOS 5
complete with MS-Word for DOS, Lotus 1-2-3
a 15" gray scale monitor, a genius mouse
a RAM of about, say, 256K?

or maybe a Windows 3.1 OS....

guys, what do you think? and where can you possibly buy
these vintage? where can you download the mentioned
programs for free?

I have 256 mb of ram and have windows xp, mozilla, antivirus , spyware, reg cleaner, and cd burner. Will this make my computer freeze randomly. And if so what do i have to have to properly fix the problem?

Someone can explain what inside of CPU for Linux and Windows? are they same or different performance?

This happens randomly, there's a single click, and the computer freezes up. Rebooting brings it back to life. I've scanned for viruses, this definatly seems to be hardware related. Could it be the power supply.

My hard drive supposedly is in bad status. My startup screen is stating that. It was fine until my power supply went out. I replaced it and now it is scan disking and is only 10% complete reading bad file segments that are unreadable. I can't boot from a windows disc. Im not sure how to delete the partition to reinstall. I am running XP.

I would like to know if I can get extra ram by having an additon added to my computer, I do not know the term for it but I have heard that I can buy something to hook up to the exterior of my computer and get more ram with it, its kinda like an extra C drive the way I understand it,, But I need to ask how would this be hooked up to my computer as well as how it would help my computer store more data?
If anyone could give me some insight about it I would appreciate it very much, I am pretty good with the computer but illiterate to this type of stuff,

I'm an inexperienced pc builder, I actually did the build putting all the pc parts together, but my friend did all the bios work. I'm wondering what RAID is? and I was told I needed a floppy to do this with windows xp.

Also how would one over clock? I know this is a question that requires a long and detailed explanation but to anyone who would like to inform me would be greatly appreciated.

Also someone told me that I needed a power supply that supports enough rails for my mobo? here's what i'm looking at

On my way to work the other day, I found a Dell Dimension 2400 computer that somebody was throwing away. Since it was in really good shape and hasn't rained in about three weeks, I figured "what the hell" and took it. After I got home, checked out the insides and plugged it up, the motherboard power LED came right on, but upon pressing the power button the machine refused to so much as power on. So far, I've tried two different and working PSU's, I've tried hooking up a new power button, and I've tried unplugging everything but the power connectors on the motherboard itself, then booting. My question to you is what component has failed here? I've never encountered a motherboard that actively receives power, but yet refuses to boot in all my 10+ years of computer experience.

Either way, I scored a good CD burner, 80GB HDD, 512MB DDR RAM, and a valid Windows XP COA so it doesn't honestly matter if I can fix it or not... but if it's something simple I can do, It'd sure be nice to fix up

Happened suddenly. Working one morning, then a few hours later, I could not boot back up after a shutdown. No power spikes. Locks up every now and then (I typically run 4-5 apps at once (Office/Acrobat/Firefox/W... HP m495c desktop computer running XP Pro SP2 Media Center 2002. Tried restarting several times over a 2-3 day period, same symptoms. Installed new video card, no help. Installed new DIMM (replaced single DIMM), no help. Tested HDD in USB enclosure connected to laptop; HDD ok. When I hit the power switch on the desktop computer, only get the power supply/fan coming on - a constant speed - no beeps or other sounds. Don't hear the hard drive spin up and "crunching" like normal, though appears to get power. Two optical drives get power; I can open them. Don't see LEDs on the motherboard when I apply power. Battery chip bad? Motherboard/CPU bad? I paid $700 2 years ago for used; worth to replace MOBO or pay for new? I don't have the OS CD. Can I use the HDD in a new system?

Whenever I burn a cd and put it in a cd player, there is always a scratching like sound, and it gets worse through each track (not even playing some).

At first I thought it was the CDs, but when i bought a new pack of a different brand it was the same. I dusted out my computer. I'm wondering what to do. Should I take my computer to the Geek Squad and have them fix it?
