Happened suddenly. Working one morning, then a few hours later, I could not boot back up after a shutdown. No power spikes. Locks up every now and then (I typically run 4-5 apps at once (Office/Acrobat/Firefox/W... HP m495c desktop computer running XP Pro SP2 Media Center 2002. Tried restarting several times over a 2-3 day period, same symptoms. Installed new video card, no help. Installed new DIMM (replaced single DIMM), no help. Tested HDD in USB enclosure connected to laptop; HDD ok. When I hit the power switch on the desktop computer, only get the power supply/fan coming on - a constant speed - no beeps or other sounds. Don't hear the hard drive spin up and "crunching" like normal, though appears to get power. Two optical drives get power; I can open them. Don't see LEDs on the motherboard when I apply power. Battery chip bad? Motherboard/CPU bad? I paid $700 2 years ago for used; worth to replace MOBO or pay for new? I don't have the OS CD. Can I use the HDD in a new system?

Remove all the connections like power, vga, mouse, keyboard etc and hold the power on button for 10 secs and then connect every thing and then try to restatrt it.
as u said that u have replaced DIMM still if it is not working then i suppose that there is a problem with the mother board (as it is not giving any beeps also),
best to get a new PC as the Mother board costs very high and as the PC is older than 2yrs it may obselate by now(Suppose).
U can use the HDD with your new system.

Either your board or your chip.
Of the two.... who cares.
get yourself a nice new board and chip set. I'm not sure what kind of memory you have but you might even get a board that can take it.

Yes, your XP will work on a new system setup, but you may need to install some new drivers. also, you will very likely have to re-register with M$.

Try hitting F2 - it should boot a different load menu. Everything should work with F12 though, but HP's may have a different set of commands.
