Your PC won't fry from ordinary use, unless its kept in conditions that aren't ordinary, such as extremely poorly ventilated areas, a very warm environment (PCs should be used at normal room temperatures of 65-75 degrees fahrenheit), and the components typically will last several years in moderate use (such as 3 hours a day.) I would NOT recommend leaving it on all the time, as that will use much more electricity, and will shorten the life of the computer, especially the hard drive, as there have been several studies of hard drive life expectancy that show the claimed lifespan of hard drives by manufacturers is greatly exaggerated.
There are two certainties in life, death and taxes. For hard drives, the taxes come at purchase, and their death will come long before yours. Always make good backups on a regular schedule.

I have a computer that is about 10 years old, was used every day for about 2 years, and still works fine. I don't think a computer can fry from being used a few hours a day. Could be hard on it to run too many programs at once, but it would just make it operate slower.

Oh, man, you are just going to eat this up.
It's actually better for a computer not to be shut down and turned on all that often. really you should leave your computer on, as long as you have a good surge protector, and your power supply doesn't dissipate enough wattage to light a small factory.
leaving a normal computer on is like having three or four fairly bright lights on all the time, and the monitor is more than that, so there are those considerations, BUT from a strictly computer standpoint, like I said, as long as you have a good surge protector, or better still a UPS, you can go ahead and leave your computer on all year. Using it will wear out the keyboard before it wears out anything else.
Hard drives have a life span, and it isn't forever. a good drive should still be replaced after maybe 3 years.. She's right in that sense.

Your mom is just telling you to get off the computer, you probably spend more time than you have too. Like my mom told me when I was 7 not to sit too close to the TV other wise my eyes would go bad. Ever heard a TV Company being sued for causing Bad Eyesight?
On an added note on the Eletricity Bill, I think your mom is just being stingy. It does not consume more power than a Microwave Oven.

Everything wears out, but the computer I'm on now has been running almost constantly for over 5 years. What is the point of having it if you don't use it? If something fails, and it will no matter what, just fix it and move on.

Just as long as the fans inside don't stop, and you blow out the dust inside every now and then, you should be fine. The CPU inside is the hottest component, and without proper air flow, it just might fry. I think I turn off my computer once a month at most.

Doubtful, especially if its a name brand computer like Dell or HP because its probably put through rigorous failure testing when it was designed.
