Probably, if the computer needs to hit the swap file then it might freeze up for a few seconds while it pages the data back and forth.
To fix the problem you can add more RAM (you'll need to find out what type of RAM your motherboard needs because the wrong type won't work (or even fit in the slot)). If you can't figure that out you can take your computer to a local computer shop and just pay them to do the upgrading (it shouldn't cost too much to add a 1 GiB module).

There are several primary areas that could be causing your computer to freeze. The most likely reason is that Corruption within your registry keys, registry classes, and registry settings.Any time you make a change to any of your computers settings and surfing online, they are stored and updated in the registry.Over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions and full of junk and errors. So if you run a program,it will take a long time to required registry file and sometime it cant find its registry files since regsitry errors and then it has to sit there. So your computer will freeze.
You need to run a self diagnostic program called regsitry cleaner. This program is very very useful,it can fix regsitry errors, clean registry remnant, corrupt files and temp files in a few minutes. Then give you a bran-new and high-speed computer. There are collection and comparison of top rated registry cleaner:

OK
first of all, you want to find out what kind of ram your computer runs, since computers vary, you want to go to the manufacturer's website (if possible) and look up your pc to find out what's inside.
then if your computer (and budget) will allow, at the minimum, you'll want to double what you have as 512 is now the minimum requirement for most high-end apps (and mozilla firefox is considered high end, based upon what you gave me)
(actually it'll run on 128, but it's smoother with a gig!)
I recommend that all systems running winxp have at least 128mb of ram installed on the board for each app you plan to run, so figure 128 for xp, 128 for mozilla, 128 for AV software, 128 for spyware, 128 for reg cleaner, 128 for cd burner, and an additional 128 to keep things running smoothly, so roughly about a gig of ram will be sufficient as an upgrade. depending on the kind of ram your computer takes, and where you buy it (be careful at auctions like e-bay and overstock) it can run you from 150-500 bucks.
PLEASE don't go out and buy the most expensive ram you can find, if you're not sure, and the manufacturer doesn't have much info, contact your local computer store, and pay them the 20 bucks for the diagnostic tests, they'll be able to let you know what you can upgrade to, and if you're super nice and give them funyuns and cheetos, they may cut you a break on the new ram.
you can also buy it yourself (it's easy to install) on several websites:

yes it can...depending on how many things you are running. You system should have about 512 mb RAM for windows xp. The best way to free up memory is go to START then RUN and type in msconfig then go to the startup items and uncheck whatever program you don't want starting up when you turn on your computer. Don't worry your not deleting them, your just preventing them from running. See how that goes....
