If you are building a new computer I suggest you use the new Intel 45nm quads that are starting to come out. Contrary to what someone said the Core 2 Duo is NOT the latest gen cpu to come out, the 45nm and AMD Phenoms are. Theres a motherboard out that can run 2 Phenoms so you'd have 8 cores!!! Regardless of what some say 2 big P4s on a dual motherboard with destroy a single dual in some apps but that's usually in the business world and I would suggest you stick with a single cpu for a home multipurpose rig. The cpu of the future is definately the quad. My Vista gaming rig has an Intel Extreme dual clocked at 3.2 but as soon as the games start coming out in quad threads(summer) that duals getting replaced with a QX9850.

Core 2 Duo is certainly better, FYI it is 2 processors in one diecast. The ancestor to it is physically having 2 sockets and that is long ancient for workstation/power use. So Core 2 Duo certainly is better, the few current dual socket MBs are designed to take in 2 C2Ds not for regular home use.

G'day there,

Core 2 Duo would definitely be your best bet. "Dual Core" sounds almost the same - whoever came up with the name is obviously a dud - but it's less powerful. As usual, the higher the value in megahertz, the better. eg. 3.1Ghz is better than 2.9Ghz.

Of course - if you see a Quad-Core, snatch it right away! Those things will rock your computing experience. ;)

Much luck,
kyttie.
