When I put the computer "TO SLEEP" and then re-start it by touching mouse etc the CPU powers up, and the screen seems to partially come to life, but it stays black and blank. The power button on the screen which is orange in sleep mode, changes back to green, as it should be ,but it wont come on. If i switch the screen power button off at this stage and on again, then the screen lights up instantly. It is only a minor prob, but was just wondering if anyone has any idea why this should happen. As i said it only happens rarely. Usually it opens up fine. Thanks, Charlie

The original Linux doesn't work anymore, so I want to reinstall windows XP professional to my laptop. I set the BIOS to boot from CD, but anyway it seems like worked. However, after the screen asked for press any key to boot from CD and I press the key, the screen turned to black without any instruction. I was sure that the XP disk is in the optical dirve, and it ran for few seconds and it stopped. I waited for about 2 hrs(patient...), it was still keeping that way.
disk is brand new... I brought my laptop last year.
Does anyone know what should I try next?

I just reformatted my laptop. Everytime I click on the quick launch menu in order to drag and drop icons onto it, it doubles up and becomes twice as thick on the bottom of the screen. I have to unlock the taskbar and manually bring it back to size. Anyone know what's going on???

I was looking at western Digital? is this a decent brand?
Should I buy as one unit? or buy the Hard drive and a shell, so I know it wasn't made in china or something?
Thanks for any advice, much appreciated.

I just came from wal-mart and they had a barebones pc there with a pretty good price $298 bucks (you get a tower some speakers and a keyboard),I believe it was an emachines and the guy there said it has a vista platform. I was under the impression vista needed a lot of sdram to work correctly. Thats why a lot of folk are having trouble with vista.I was thinking to my self. Am I right?
can I get a little help?

I have a 250GB USB removable mass storage device. I am using Windows Vista. The device has stopped working for some reason and can no longer be viewed in Explorer. I have tried rescanning the disks in Disk Management to no avail. All data recovery programs I have tried only work with recognized disks. I would really appreciate any advice. I have an awful lot of data on the disk. Free solutions are preferable as I don't have any money at the moment. Thank you for any help offered.

When i turn off my computer and then turn it back on, the time set changes. How do I keep it from changing? Like for example, if i turn it off right now and it's 11:22, and I turn it on, it will give me something way off.

I am probably going to go with a 2.5" hard drive enclosure but I want to make sure the laptop I buy will be able to read my old files. I've been reading that some hard drives are IDE and some are another kind (I forgot what the article said). Does it matter if they are different kinds of hard drives? Will they still transfer files? Any suggestions on a laptop for under $800 (all I need is internet, DVD/CD burner and a reasonably good video card)? Oh...and how hard is it to remove the actual hard drive from your laptop? I'm kind of worried about that part!

I suffered a hard disk failure the other night. :-( I managed to re-animate my operating system from the backup copy I had on the partition, but obviously all my recent files are lost. (I've backed up files previously, but not for the last few weeks). I've put in a second hard drive to recover files from c: to, but the PC won't ascribe a drive letter. I've got a 200GB drive with C: and D: (as the OS backup partition) on a SCSI. There are 2 SCSI ports on my motherboard. I've also got 2 optical drives running as master and slave on one IDE and now I've connected a 320GB drive to the other IDE. I've tried attaching via the master and slave sockets on the IDE and changing the jumpers from factory setting (cable select) to device 1 (slave) and device 1 (slave present). The hardware manager accepts that there is a hard disk drive present, but won't give it a drive letter. It also claims that 'this device is working properly'!
