Why do you wish to get rid of your vista o/s that you have paid for consider duel boot with xp then you can run your programmes games you are using now in xp & learn vista as the year goes on vista will get better its the new kid on the block like 98se xp will be surpassed in time but if you want to proceed get an external hard drive to back up too
format the C: drive 4 times this wipes it clean then install the operating system you require

Easy one. Format the windows partition (if you have more than one). All the files you want to keep go to the other partitions.
Or... back up your files and format.

Hi. Usually just a format and reinstall (OS of your choice) will do it.
