on start up my computer says that its can't locate the 80 conductor cable?? what is that.. and can i fix it - because i need use of the printer and can't whilst the computer isn't working..

This is the cable to the HARD DRIVE, the flat ribbon one.

Open case, make sure all are securely seated into sockets, press with 1 finger at each end.

If it's simply the warning that 40 conductor are being used it should still work.

An 80 conductor cable is an IDE cable that is used for hard drives. It has an additional 40 wires that are all grounds running thru it to keep you from getting data errors from your hard drive. If you compare it to a 40 conductor IDE cable you can see that it has twice as many smaller wires in it. Do not use a 40 cable on a hard drive regardless of what anyone tells you because it IS NOT ok.
