I will tell you the same thing I told my inlaws. It depends on what you need to do. But if you walk into an Apple Store, then into a PC store; compare the customer service levels in addition to the machines' features.
There are many things which a Mac will work great at that a PC is not that good on; digital assets (photos, music, movies, etc) are much easier to manage on a Mac due to the iLife suite (iTunes is a part of that on the Mac). PCs are cheaper at first, but there are usually sacrifices for it. You pay more $$ for software to do certain things; there are 6 versions of VISTA (and I can't keep them straight), and VISTA has been having major issues.
But my advice is go Mac; b/c when it comes down to it- Macs can run windows apps. So even if you need to run something like MS Access (and my biased opinion is on that- "I'm Sorry") that doesn't exist as native on the Mac; you can install windows and run it (newer software that I haven't read up on actually bypasses the need for windows at all).
Also, Apple's Tech support has been #1 or close to in the industry for quite a while. Not to mention that you can go to an APPLE store, and amongst other free things they have there is transferring your data from a previous machine (yes, PCs too) to a new Mac, plus they can install any SW you buy there- quite a bargain at FREE!
Mac laptops also start at 1100 or so; less if you are a student.
And since I forgot, there have been more malicious programs for the PC that came out since I started typing this than have come out in Apple's ENTIRE history as a company. Not to say Apple is perfect, but when was the last time you heard of a major windows bug or flaw? When was the last time you heard same about Mac?
Visit the stores, play with the machines (both Mac and PC) and don't listen to us biased idiots. Anything anyone has said (so far) can be refuted by another.

I think the trend will gradually steer away from PC because MS has become so uppity about their software, and Vista was such a bummer. Surprisingly lots of folks are trying to get new PCs with XP instead of Vista!
I'm going for Apple next, and I'm an old PCer.
Apple's great for graphics and gaming.
However, to be honest and realistic and all that, the world's built around PC and "productivity business" software tends toward the "more traditional" Windows.

There is really no reason to pick a mac.
If anyone says "virus" i have never got one in 12 years. At macs also a few. Along with built in spyware. Anyone says more secure is a liar as mac have just as many bugs and problems.

If you are completely computer illiterate, never want to upgrade, don't care about functionality, only buy apple-made accessories, never play games, only care about looks, and want your computer to freeze up ALL the time, then get a Mac.
If you want a real compter, get a nice PC running Windows XP.

PC and UNIX./LINUX...freeBSD, RedHAT, solaris :)why because
1. most good games sometimes won't run on MAC.
depends what you want to do, surfing, games, business done its splitted between MAC and PC. depends how fat is your wallet.
and to people who say that MAC has never gor any viruses. that pure fiction. :). MAC has viruses as well, you just don't know, check online computers magazines.
