Hardware - April 2007

I currently have a 20gig HD in my Dell which is going on 5 yrs old, but I'm slowly running out of space on it.

I would like to put a bigger HD in it, thinking about a 80 gig or bigger, but my question is...

If I put this harddrive in, can everything be transfered from the old HD to the new HD and if it possible...

How do you do that, willing to learn but dont know where to start.

I was messing around in my system configuration the other day and I noticed that HT was off for my Pent 4 processor. That must be the default from Dell, because I have never changed it before. I was wondering why it would be off. Plus, are there any drawbacks to running your hard drive on "performance" rather than "bypass" other than extra noise? I turned the processor to HT "on" and hard drive to "performance" for some extra juice, if there is no reason why not to.

ok, so my dad is REALLY stuborn, and i HATE the laptop he bought around 6 months ago. It takes FOREVER to boot up, none of the programs work instantly, and we've done a system restore around 2 times already. i just HATE the laptop hw got, and i keep telling him that he could've gotten a laptop around twice as better(imo that is) for around the same price. i want to convince him to sell the laptop he has and to get a macbook, but how?

I have just bought a new Dell computer which does not have parellel port or serial port. Therefore I do not have LPT1 port and COM port. Now, the problem is, there is no way for me to map LPT1 port for DOS printing. I cannot not use the command of NET USE LPT1 \\ServerName\PrnterName to map my network printer. What can I do?

Please help and advice.

The hardrive in my computer fried. I don't mind losing most things, it was mostly written music that I had written so I can redo it, but a had about $500.00 in iTunes purchases on it. Does anyone know if iTunes keeps a record of what you purchase, or is their any way I can get that information? I know I can't off of my old hardrive, but... Anything would be helpful.

When i looked at a site there, my mouse pointer vanished on the screen but PC continued working as normal (the pointer just seemed invisible) - i restarted and it's fine now, but i'm wondering why the pointer disappeared?

what are some things i need to look for when building a pc. i have been looking at amd, cause there cheaper, but what is 90nm and 65nm and whats the difference. whats the difference between brisbane and windsor. and what is L1 and L2 cache and what is a good amount of cache. how do you determine what is a good heat sink and fan. also what should i look for in mother boards. thanx for any help.

My raid 0 hard disk volume suddenly says it has 90 gigs used when last week it was around 40. I havent added anything much since. my media/docs folder is around 29gb, windows folder is around 9gigs, and i can't see anything else of significant size..where the -!** is 90gigs coming from?? I also feel it added another 5 today. i am running vista ultimate edition.

I am confused:

I have a new mobo with dual channel (4 memory slots) - on it are 2 sticks - both have the below sticker:

Samsung 512 MB 1Rx8 PC2 5300U 55 12 D3
M378T6553CZ3 - CE6 0702

they are sticking in slots 0 and 3 (one is black, one blue)

I want to upgrade the memory by using 2 x 1 GB so my question:

will these sticks in slots 1 and 3 work fine???

(I am not getting the Samsung chips easily at my trusted shop)

I want to connect my palm to any public pc so I can swap files on and off it like a usb key.
I thought that a particularly unnecessarily complicated and therefore cool way to do this might be to get a bluetooth usb key. I bought one off ebay for the paltry sum of £5 inc p+p, but
a/ the software is shite and
b/ it isn't plug and play and requires installation- I can't do this on public computers (e.g. at uni)


Does anyone know of any that might work natively like a usb key, and allow me to use my palm like a USB key?

Alternatively, what about a USB wi-fi adapter? they are only about £15- are they able to be used on computers to which you don't have admin access to install hardware?

The directions on Arctic Silver's site say to apply a thin line of paste over the processor (Over the heatspreader). There is nothing about spreading that paste out, other than when you apply the heatsink of the cooler. Do I need to use my finger to spread the paste around the heatsink or do I just plop the cooler on and have the pressure spread out the paste?
