The directions on Arctic Silver's site say to apply a thin line of paste over the processor (Over the heatspreader). There is nothing about spreading that paste out, other than when you apply the heatsink of the cooler. Do I need to use my finger to spread the paste around the heatsink or do I just plop the cooler on and have the pressure spread out the paste?

Another question: The directions for AC5 do not have anything about applying paste to the heatsink of the cooler, but the directions for AC ceramique say to do this. Should I apply AC5 to the cooler?

No, you do as the directions say. As one guy mentioned, using your finger would be awful, the oil from your skin would definately reduce the effectiveness. You simply put a small thin line, then you allow the pressure to spread it. Also do the thing Artic Silver mentions, when you put the heatspreader down, move it in a circular motion 2-3 degrees, that will help it spread a little better. I would really not recommend using anything to spread it around, it works best when applied the way they state to apply it on their site.

Your should always use as little as possible and it should cover then entire contact surface (only the part that touches the heatsink). You should never use your finger to spread heat sink compound because the oil from your finger will not transfer heat as well as the compound.

I use a single edge razor blade to spread in a very thin layer that you can almost see through - remember that this is only to fill in the gaps between the CPU and the heatsink - any more and you actually get worse cooling.

Also, when you put the heatsink down make sure that it is actually touching the top of the CPU or your processor will overheat and burnup almost instantly.

just put a little bit on the top of the processor. When you put the heatsink down on it, it will spread the paste out evenly.

By a little bit, I mean a really little bit. Probably no wider than the end of a pen.

The ceramique is completely different than the other brand. It's literally like cement, and shouldn't be put on anything other than what's absolutely stated.

Personally I prefer to take a credit card or something and smooth the paste out evenly rather than relying on the pressure of the heatsink/fan to spread the paste out evenly. Just spread out a smooth, very thin layer across the processor and you will be fine.
