have you tried to run a disk analyzer that will show what is taking up so much room? I use disk keeper, haven't tried it with my Vista computer but it should work just fine.

55GB is not a lot in this day and age. If you are running a laptop that came with 55GB, then by now it is probably quite old. Removing unused programs/files is a good place to start. Doing defrags doesn't really reduce the amount of disc space used in the long run, although it does increase disc performance (making your computer a little faster) I would suggest you don't bother spending the money in upgrading your laptop if it is old. Although if it is still a fairly "new" model, then you can upgrade by speaking to the manufacturer or asking where ever you brought it from.

Do you have your computer set up to show "hidden" and "system" files? If you set it up to show these, you can see all the files and where all this space is allocated.

It might be Vista allocating a large block of memory for a virtual memory manager, but I doubt it.

I know that the de-fragment utility in Windows will show system file memory blocks - you could run that and also see if any file fragmentation has used up disk space.

its a scary thought when i consider vista and reliable raid drivers ... i would try entering the raid utility at bootup and see what it looks like ... and backup ... soon ..
