I was messing around in my system configuration the other day and I noticed that HT was off for my Pent 4 processor. That must be the default from Dell, because I have never changed it before. I was wondering why it would be off. Plus, are there any drawbacks to running your hard drive on "performance" rather than "bypass" other than extra noise? I turned the processor to HT "on" and hard drive to "performance" for some extra juice, if there is no reason why not to.

The main reason that I can see that's logical is HEAT...with HT turned on the processor is going to generate more heat...I'd check the heatsink on the CPU just to see if it's really small or something..if it is then you are going to shorten the life of the processor...One way of knowing how hot every thing's getting in there is to run Motherboard Monitor...I use it all the time to keep tabs on the CPU & Mobo temps...

Now, with performance turned on, that takes away from visual styles & animation...in other words it turns them off and gives you the default view...Most don't like that...they want everything to look nice even if it means a slower computer...

HT makes your processor appear "dual core" because of multithreading capability. However, HT also increases power consumption and cache trashing.

For your hard drive, try loading a temp monitoring software like Everest. Check the temps at both performance and bypass settings. If the same, then there appears to be no problem.

If the processor is smaller than 3.0GHz then HT technology will not work. That may be why it's not activated. ,
