The high voltage parts emit Ozone, which should be absorbed by a filter, perhaps the filter is old. Exposure to Ozone is linked to respiratory problems. Also toner dust, which again should be retained in the printer, can give problems with asthmatics or allergy sufferers

Yes, it can be in high doses.

The smell is ozone, which is normally present in the atmosphere, however high doses can be harmful. That is why laser printers are fitted (usually) with an ozone filter.

Follow the safety instructions with your printer.

PS - watch out for the toner - you don't want to breath that in or eat it!

The smell is ozone. It comes from the high voltage parts of the fuser assembly. There should be an ozone filter fitted to prevent too much ozone escaping. It might need replacing. Whilst not harmful in the long term, it can cause headaches and nausea if you breath too much of it.
