If you have one of those very small 2.5" external enclosures that use a laptop drive, it could be that it is not getting enough power to work correctly - this happens sometimes when a drive gets older. Try borrowing a friends "dual power" cable - these have TWO USB "A" connectors on the computer side to get more power and a single connector on the external drive side.

If you try connecting to a different computer with a different cable and it still doesn't work, it could be that the USB enclosure and its circuitry has given up. You could try removing the hard drive from the USB enclosure and buying a new enclosure (fairly inexpensive) and installing the drive in the new box. Make sure to get one with the same interface as the old box.

yea, buy a new hard drive caddy, bust open your external hard drive and take out the hard drive and then place in the new caddy.

or take to specialist to do it. souldn't take long, but the'd probably charge a mint.

If it is as dead as you say it is? Probably not yourself but there are companies who can take the disk platters and retrieve the information for you.
