People seem to have an issue answering this one correctly. You have to do some research for it.
I go for the "best bang for the buck". That's usually the AMD cpus. A few charts to compare:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core2duo-e4300_6.html

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2007/02/22/amd_athlon_64_x2_6000/1.html

Intel E6300 about the AMD x2 4600+ speed
Intel E6400 about the AMD x2 5000+ speed
Intel E6600 about the AMD x2 5400+ speed
Intel E6700 about the AMD x2 6000+ speed
As the above charts prove..
There is really ONLY ONE intel cpu that is the fastest cpu, the EX6800. In motherboard performance, most using the same chipset (or similar) really perform about the same. Again to a little research on it, and www.newegg.com for it's previews. Now the real question is what do you mean performance? Cad? applications? music? some of these differ in needs. 3d games, for example, is really about the video card. http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html
Doing calculations then the fastest cpu you can get. Just do a little research on what you mean by performance. What program you are using and what will benefit it the best.
And btw: it has nothing to do about the best for money, as charts show (and prove) it's for the performance.

Well the first guy was semi-right, AMD is known for gaming, becasue I cannot count the number of people on here who say that line. However, at the moment, the Intel Core 2 Duos are the fastest out, which means they are faster at EVERYTHING, just like at this time last year the AMD Athlon 64 X2s were the fasters out, which meant they were faster at EVERYTHING.

There are actually several differences between the two, most of them a bit technical to go into here. If you really want technical jargon, let me know. As I said the best processors are the Core 2 Duos, the Core 2 Quads are too expensive and give no real advantage in normal situations. As for motherboards, go with an ASUS, something with a P965 chipset.

EDIT: To computertech, DID HE SAY BEST FOR THE MONEY. No, he said best for performance. Read the question before you tell others that they are wrong. If he had said best for money, I would have said AMD, but he didn't.

The top processors out now are Intels Quad core processors. They are extremely expensive but are supposed to be coming down soon. What I recommend is Intel's Core 2 Duo line of processors. By far the best Bang for buck out there now. I have the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600. Very nice CPU.

AMD and Intel are competitors. Intel is the top dog right now and from what I understand AMD is going down. Intel has AMD beat in every category of CPU technology.

AMD-known for gaming. Run really fast but have only 1mb of cache. Cache is just the memory in the chip that helps it pull up info that you have just recently looked at. More the better. It allows energy effeciency and easier on the CPU.
Intel- Known for doing office programs really well (better than AMD) more expensive.

You probably won't know the difference. You get basically the same thing from both companies.

A-bit and Asus as well as intel make nice mother boards.

WoW isn't the biggest stressful game available, so advantageous factors alongside with incredibly some video card help presented via skill of a few stepped forward motherboards are actually not incredibly low-value. detect a motherboard with the advantageous factors you pick - processor help for particular, USB 3.0 consistent with possibility - and seek for for one on the less extreme priced end. I admit to favoring ASUS and Gigabyte motherboards for undemanding operation reputations. an magnificent motherboard is frequently insignificantly greater desirable clever than a reliable motherboard, yet a undesirable one willcontinual you nuts determining a thank you to artwork around the area concerns.
