this computer was purchased brand new by my grandfather in December of 2005. Since then the hard drive has been wiped out at least 4 times due to viruses, spyware, or simply because the computer would not even display the GUI (except in safe mode). The last time the hard drive was cleared it was simply because the computer was inspected by a technician who reccomended that the hard drive be cleared because there were literally hundreds of viruses, e.t.c. from downloaded programs, and the only way to get rid of them all was to completely clear the hd. But I am just worried because I keep clearing it. Does clearing it cause any damage that may eventually cause you to have to replace it? And is there a limit to how many times you can clear the hard drive? I just really want to know if it is okay to keep clearing it. Because I don't want to keep doing it if it is causing damage.
Also, does having viruses/spyware cause damage to your hd? And if so does clearing your hd erase this damage?

I have my computer hooked up to my home stereo system through auxilary and it makes a buzzing sound all the time like a ground is messed up. It's connected through 5 six feet extension cables and it only buzzes when my computer(Dell) or my laptop(Dell) is hooked up. It doesn't buzz when my brother's laptop(HP) is hooked up or my mp3 player(Creative). Sup with that?

I'm looking to put together a new computer from scratch and have been researching a lot and just wanted to get a few more opinions. I need a very versatile computer for work, video gaming, and video editing.

Suggestions on video cards, cases, motherboards, processors, cooling systems etc would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

When I click on the drive icon a error pops up saying d: is not accessible access is denied. I am running xp home with admin account. I have replaced the ide cable as suggested by the ms help articles. This has happened within the last few weeks. When I checked the eventlog, it reports that the driver detected a controller error on \device\harddisk1\d. My bios is up-to-date as far as I know. My motherboard is a Gigabyte ga7vaxp. Hard drive is a Western Digital 80gb(model 800jb). I need to recover the files on this drive as it has a wedding video.

My CD drive burns data files fine to CD and DVD but not audio. The dive is a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ825s and the software I've tried is either Power To Go or Windows media player. The file type is WMA. Windows media player says 'No CD or DVD burner has been detected'
