The simple answer: No.
Many companies sell two-packs of RAM because it guarantees your will have two sticks that work well together. If you are choosing between 2X256 and 1X512, take the 512, otherwise you are just sucking up real estate on your motherboard with no added benefit. Also, less sticks of RAM help your computer to run faster. If the computer is travelling between two sticks of 256 that will take longer than one stick of 512.

you can buy one at a time but if you can, check how much can your motherboard hold because it can only hold a certain amount of rams so if i were u i would find out how much and max it out even if it means to buy expensive ones. Still you can buy one at a time but make sure that you have enough to start windows xp which is about 250mb of ram or so. Get a least one gb ram.

It all depends on how many banks your mother board needs to fill at once.
Now a days you can just upgarde 1 chip at a time. Check your motherboard manual.

when you buy ram you get burger & fries and a softdrink to go with your order . im sure you know what ram is for a computer now or do you need to go back to pc school for 10 more years.
