Forgive my ignorance, but I'm having Comcast High Speed Internet installed tomorrow, and I'm a little unsure about the process.

I asume the installer will bring with him everything I need, but is that right?

And I definitely don't have to have a landline, correct? That's my main reason for switching over to high speed. I'm basically paying over $40/month for dial-up, because I only use my landline to connect.

I'll have Internet access immediately after it's set up, right?

Anything else you want to throw in there about the whole shebang would be great.

Thanks, and I'm sorry about my woeful ignorance about this whole subject!

I have a laptop with a built in wierless internet card. But I have no router and our phone service is off. Sometimes I can connect to Linksys access point and sometimes I can't. I dont understand, Is Linksys supposed to be a free public access point for anyone within range or am I "stealing" someone else's access point such as a neighbor with a Linksys modem? I'm trying to understand how we're getting internet so I can figure out how to keep a good signal.

You have asked by Thrift Towne, a local charity retail organization, to install a network in its downtown office. Its currently has four PC’s running Windows XP Professional, with the following specifications:

Pentium II, 500 MHz processor, 128 MB memory, 4 GB hard drive
Pentium II, 500 MHz processor, 256 MB memory, 10 GB hard drive
Pentium 4, 1 GHz processor, 512 MB memory, 40 GB hard drive
Pentium 4, 3 GHz processor, 1 GB memory, 120 GB hard drive

Thrift Towne’s owners are not very concerned about security, because the network will share only inventory information (customers remain anonymous and not tracked) between its own PCs. Thrift Towne uses volunteers to run its stores, and the volunteers are not technical experts, so they are hoping for a solution that doesn’t require any complex maintenance. In addition, Thrift Towne doesn’t have much money to spend on this project. In short, the owners have asked for a simple, inexpensive solution.

I've been trying to fix this problem with limited connectivity but i keep running into new stuff. First, you should know:I have a Compaq laptop with a built in wireless card. Sometimes I stay connected for a while and other times I get kicked off. then when I try to reconnect, I get the "limited or no connectivity". Or "acquiring network address" (which never does.) Sometimes I get a good signal and sometimes none. I always connect to the Linksys and when I get a signal, its okay. I have no antenna or routers outside of my laptop. Also, our phone service is off, so is there still any need for our modem?
Now:
1) Is the problem the card?
2) Is the router something ELSE that is built in? (if not, then I must
not have one)
3) Is it necessary?
3) Could wrong settings be the problem?
4) How do you reinstall the card if needed?
5) Is there any easier low cost way to guarentee wireless internet?
6) What is WPA encription and details?
7) Wheres the change channel option?

I'm setting up a server in my home for a new business. I'm running SuSE Linux 10.1 and would like to know what I need to do to setup a mail server. The web server is no problem, but I don't know what's involved in hosting my own mail. How does another server know where to send mail? How does the server get it? Any good and informative sites and links would also be appreciated.

I am thinking of switching to insight cable and internet and they have a modem to buy. However a family member of mine works for a different cable company (that I can't get) and I am wondering if one of their modems would work. I could get it cheaper if it would.

I have a desktop with a printer installed. The desktop connects to the internet through a LinkSys WRTP54G firewall/router. The linksys connects to a dsl modem that connects to my DSL(PPPoE)connected. The desktop is connected to the router via Cat5 ethernet cable(but does have a wifi card).

And I just bought a new laptop which is connects to the internet via WIFI.
I want to share the printer on my wired PC to the wireless laptop. Both running XP pro.

When I go through "network setup wizzard" I select "this computer connects to the internet directly through a network hub. Other computers connect to the internet throuhg a hub" ...is that correct?

When I select to "share folders and printer" XP gives me a message saying since i connect difrec tly through a hub people on the internet will be able to view my shared files and use my printer, security risk...etc.

Am i doing this correctly? Should i set it up some other way?

Thanks
