Think of it like this:
A router replaces your pc as the
component which connects to the modem.
You connect to the router instead of the actual
modem to get to the internet.
This has the added benefit of allowing multiple computers
to connect at the same time.
The router is made to handle that as well.
A router will also allow you to connect to other
computers which have connected to it.
Not too long ago, you had to have a wire connected
from your pc to the router.
With wireless, you no longer need to.
A radio signal is used to communicate
between the computer and the router.
This radio signal has limitations on what it can
travel through, and how far it can travel.
Keep the layout and construction of your house in mind
when deciding on a router.
Mirrored and or concrete walls tend to interfere with signals.
Distance is also a factor.
There are 3 grades of wireless B,G, and N.
N was draft the last time I checked, but it should be
approved soon.
N would be the one you want to go with.
If you can't wait, then go with G
B is cheap, as it is the oldest.
There is some setup involved in making sure
everything works properly, but it's fairly easy to understand.

A Wireless Router is basically a Modem, Hardware Firewall, Small Computer and 2way Radio all in on little box. The Wireless Modem Router, will have a Telephone Connection, an Ethernet Connection and (Normally) an aerial.
The modem itself sits in the corner permanently connected, even if all computers are switched off. When someone connects up, It sends the information down the required medium (Wire or Wireless) to give you a connection. If you get one with a Web Browser Based Interface, non of the computers require any additional software and the modem does all of the connecting. That way you could all have laptops and not be tied down to one being Static for everything to work.

A router is an electronic gadget that plugs into your phone inlet, this then broadcasts the phone line signal by radio waves to a receiver either a PCI card inside your computer or an adaptor that plugs into a USB port on your computer. The signal FROM the computer is sent in a similar way to the router. As this is done by radio waves it is "wireless" so you can use the internet anywhere within the range of the signal.

First choose which computer in the house that you want to be your main computer, normally your desktop. Purchase a wired or wireless Router and hook it up to your main choice. Also, hook up your printer to that same computer. If you've chosen to use a wireless router, make sure that the internet card in your laptop is also wireless so that it's signal can jump to the router on your main machine, remembering that your service can only be as fast as your slowest computer, be sure to purchase the correct speed of router and internet card, the fastest being "N" which is capable of delivering Streaming Audio and Video. The "G" system also performs at a good speed and has the ability to work around corners, up and down stairs, from outside at the pool etc. Last is the "B" system which is the not only the slowest of them all but has problems with long distances, unlike the "G" system. Lynksys makes a great system and is reasonably priced. With the two computers hooked up in this manor, everything should work great for you. There are "range extender" antennas on the market that can extend the range even more if necessary. The router will also provide you with excellent hacker protection, as they have their own "IP" hiding properties. Hit me on dumbbutt4321@yahoo.com if I can help further. Larry (RadioShack 01-9590)

Kinda does what it says on the tin...It's a broadband internet connection where you don't need the computer to be connected to the phone line because the router is, and the router sends out a signal to the computer. Hope that helps xx

answer on your question is, not something. they're giving them for unfastened. in case you're already with an internet provider service who could fee you for the provider, then exchange to individual who promises you it, freed from charge.
