just buy a router and a modem.
connect the modem to your power source, and then connect the router to the modem. the router transmits wireless signals. therefore, no matter how many computer systems are in a certain region, all of them get to experience LAN connection.

You can use a CAT5 ethernet cable used for networking, by crimping the RJ45 connectors (the white plastic connector heads) in a crossover connection which is done specially for connecting two computers only. Normal crimping which is used to connect computers in a network through a hub/switch will not work. Your local computer shop should be able to crimp a cable of required length for you. Both of your computers should have a network card to insert the pins. After the cable is in place you can configure a new network connection to identify and create a network connection between the two computers. You can give each computer an ip address for example 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 and a subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Then enable print and file sharing on each computer.

To connect two computers (PCs) using a USB bridge in Windows XP:
- Install the software that comes with your hardware. It will copy the driver to your computer.
- Plug the USB bridge cable end to your computer' USB port.
- Follow the instructions on the Found New Hardware Wizard that appears to install the USB network adapter.
- Verify that the USB network adapter has been installed from the Device Manager.

- A Local Area Connection will be created under LAN or High Speed Internet in Network Connections folder. You can use the Network Setup Wizard or define IP address and configure other settings manually via the Network Connections folder. The step-by-step instructions are similar with direct connection using Ethernet crossover cable. It includes defining computer and workgroup names, assigning private IP addresses and preparing files/folders, printer or Internet connection for sharing.
- If you find troubles when configuring the connection using Windows automatic private IP address assignment (DHCP), define a static IP address for each USB network adapter on each computer. Both IP addresses must be within the same subnet.
- If both PCs have USB 2.0 ports, you are going to have a 480 Mbps connection. If one PC has USB 1.1 port, the connection speed will fall to 12 Mbps.

If there are just 2 PCs you may connect them directly using CAT5 cable and NIC or Printer cable if your PC has Parallel port.
Best way is to use a network media like hub, switch or router. you may connect more than 2 PCs this way.
In Case of hub you may need to have static IP for your network
Router can assign dynamic IP within ur network.
