I have been using macs for 6 years now as my only computer and have yet to encounter a virus. I don't even bother with virus software. It is great. I worry that someday that will change, but for now there aren't really a lot of viruses written for macs.

I have a mac. Unless you browse pronography webpages 24/7, you don't need any security. In 2006 there were only a few (under a dozen) proof of concept viruses for Mac OS X. That is, there were no harmful viruses, only a few that show there CAN be viruses written. Of course, most of the vulnerabilites have already been patched.
What I recomend, is just have a good hardwire firewall router. It should at least has SPI and NAT, if not more.
But software wise, you don't need anything.
Hope to see you joining the Mac world Soon!

The majority of earth's population is running some version of windows on their computers. With so many people running the same operating system on their computer, that particular group is prone for viruses of sorts.
Think of it this way. Think of the computer world like you would the world of politics (military-wise). The PC is the United States of the computer world. The mac is the Japanese of the computer world. Many people view the United States (and the PC) as good. But there are a few people (terrorists/virus designers) that don't like the United States (and the PC) and think that they are trying to control everybody. So they either ram a jet into the building or design a virus to make people think twice about the United States or PC. Where as with Japan and Mac, they sort of do they're own thing and nobody really notices.
In short, Mac users have less to worry about because there's less of a threat.

Mac OS X is an extremely secure operating system, largely thanks to its Unix foundations. There are no viruses to speak of for Mac OS X, and so most Mac users (myself included) do not run antivirus software. It's just not necessary.
