Maintenance & Repairs - November 2007

[Selected]: All categories Cars & Transportation Maintenance & Repairs

I don't know much about cars or car repair. I just thought I'd ask this quick question because my husband called me from work claiming that one of his co-workers (who he claims knows about car repair) said that we need a new head gasket and that it's so expensive that we'd be better off buying a new car instead.

I'm just wondering if it really is THAT expensive. My husband has been itching for a new car, so I'm suspicious that he's pulling my leg to convince me to let him bounce on over to the nearest dealership.

Since I'm not too bright when it comes to cars, I'm not even sure if a head gasket could be the problem. We have oil leaks and a coolant leak (that comes and goes). Not much information, but that's all I know.

What do you think?

Please forgive my ignorance.

- for a DOHC engine, 1600cc, 4 speed automatic transmission.

- what benefits are there if the camshafts were upgraded from the stock unit to a high performance unit?

- what shortcomings will there be? (example, increase in petrol consumption?)

hope to know more ....thank you..

I was changing my fuel filter today (canister type) after i removed the canister from my truck i noticed that there was a crack in it where the fuel lines join the canister the (tibb) i gave it a little force to see if it might be hair or something it completely broke off. So is there any way i can put it back on (by glue or other means) or should i go auto salvaging and try and find a new used canister in the junk yards.

My car will not start sometimes. I arranged for a new battery and when they checked the current battery first it showed that it was not flat. They then said it might be the starter motor but ruled that out when we discovered it would start if put in neutral. Does anyone know what the problem might be if the battery and starter motor have both been ruled out as the problem.

I removed the radio/control panel but find no mechanism. The central temperature control knob has a nylon gear behind it, but this doesn't seem to mate to anything. I am willing to jerry-rig something to get the hot water to circulate through the heater core. Any suggestions appreciated. (My Haynes manual skips this bit!)
