I removed the radio/control panel but find no mechanism. The central temperature control knob has a nylon gear behind it, but this doesn't seem to mate to anything. I am willing to jerry-rig something to get the hot water to circulate through the heater core. Any suggestions appreciated. (My Haynes manual skips this bit!)

I would first check the carpet on the passenger side of the car and feel if it's wet. If it is the heater core is leaking, if it's not then you either have a problem with that control knob, it should have vacuum lines plugged into it, if not something came un done, or you have a problem with the blend doors, that means it is stuck in a cool mode, and the door is not opening/closing to let the heat in.

Under the hood near the heater you should find a valve, probably vacuum operated, that controls the coolant flow to the heater. If one hose is hot and the other cooler the valve is not opening. You can remove this valve and put a fitting in its place with a couple of hose clamps. This will supply max heat all the time. Replace the valve or whatever is wrong at your leisure.

Under the Hood look at the "Hot Water Valve" for the heater, is it Mechanical or Vacuum Operated? With the Engine Warm disconnect the Vacuum Line or Control Cable, operate it by hand, does the heater get warm? if yes valve is good. Trace Cable or Vacuum Line to see if they are Broken or Cracked!

Nylon Gear may be part of a Vacuum Control! Operate the gear with you fingers, does it open the Valve? Yes? then the control to gear connection Might be Broken?

Hot coolant constantly circulates and the knob controls when the duct work opens to let air pass by the heater core. It is a vacuum operated valve. I just fixed this in my car earlier. A vacuum line poped off the engine so no air was coming out of the vents. It only blew air when on the cooling position.

Verify coolant flow through the heater coil first. If the temp control is via a valve on the coolant line to the core, it's probably plugged up with corrosion from being stagnant.
You should be able to locate the valve under the hood, in the heater hose, and turn it with pliers to get flow through it. If the core is plugged, try blowing it through backwards with air. You might get lucky and unplug it.

If inlet hose to heater core is hot and outlet is cold or cooler then probably the heater core is stopped up and water cant get through the core..
