My car has a small coolant leak and I do let it get low enough to get the low coolant level indicator.

If you have a leak then your heater core will not have the proper coolant level in it. It is like a mini radiator and the blower motor blows air across the heater core so you have heat. If your coolant is low then not enought coolant get to the heater core and you don't have heat. I'm betting that it's when your coolant is low that you loose your heat.

have a radiator shop fix your radiator your heat problems will be solved.
Stop leak is another option but it gums everything up.

Regards!!

Many times air gets into the highest part of the cooling system. If coolant leaks out air gets sucked in when the engine cools off. Basic physics water weighs more than the coolant in the resv. Give some thought to a complete repair or suffer a cooling system nightmare. Don't forget a 10 year old car also needs radator cap hoses, radator and thermostat checked and replaces as necessary

Check you level, it is possible that your heat coming and going is caused by the heater core having fluid in it sometimes, and not others, this could be caused by a low coolant level.
