Maintenance & Repairs - November 2007

I just bought my first car 2 months ago (got insurance a few days ago). The car is an R reg FIAT Punto. Ive got some receipts from the previous owner but I cant find one to say that the timing belt had been replaced.

The belt looks new and the cam cover has been cracked by someone over-tightening it. It sounds to me like its been done but I know what damage it can do if it breaks!

Is there a way to see if its ok?

How do i know if it needs to be changed?
(When it snaps on the M6??, ha ha, very funny!)

Anyone know?

I have a 1975 Ford F100 302ci that has been sitting up for 3 years. I changed the battery and gas (expecting an easy start); however, the plugs wern't even sparking (yes the truck turns over great) so I changes the Coil, Condenser, and Points. Still no spark does anyone know of anything else. How can I tell if I am even getting any power to the coil and does it matter which wire goes on what side of the Coil. All answers appreciated the answer that leads to a spark wins points!!!!

Sometimes I only get clicking sound when turning the key. On 5th - 10th try, engine turns over right away.
- Battery is new, and fully charged.
- To fix this, I changed the starter with a rebuilt, installed new alternator, installed new battery and fully charged, new battery cable posts
- Problem is intermittent...sometimes starter engages instantly...other times, 5 -10 tries.
- Pep boys did full electrical diagnostic, found nothing (maybe doesn't mean much, tho)

Right now, I'm leaning toward buying & installing another starter (new, not rebuilt).

What is this?! Been going on for weeks...

When i drive... I can drive my ford probe straight but the steering wheel is slightly uncentered (about 25 degrees).
Will I get into an accident if I keep driving my car like this?
I mean everything is straight though and I can manage to run on straight but will it have a complication like car being broke down and lead into accident while driving? because I'm trying to fix it tommorrow but I can't so can I still drive it tommmorrow and do the fixing next week?

We have a 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan. Check engine light came on today. Took it to Advance Auto and had them read it with their computer thing. The guy said it was the transmission solenoid.

It's the holidays and we have children so we really don't have money to fix it right away. Our van is running just fine. It shifts fine, it doesn't get hot or anything out of the ordinary.

Is it ok to drive to the store, my husband drives to work about 15 miles away. We don't plan on any long distance driving until we get this fixed.

1.Is it ok to drive???
2. How long will this problem hold out??
3. If it is ok to drive, what should we look for on the first sign on trouble?
4. If the "solenoid" does "go out"..what happens?? It will not ruin the tranny, will it? What probs will it cause?

Thanks!! Please on Mechanics reply!!!

Happy Holidays!!

for the past few weeks my turn signals have been either working fine or not working at all. But now it seems that they dont work more often than they work. I checked the fuses on the side inside my car and by the engine but they are good. what can be wrong i hate using hand signals besides its getting too cold for that now.

"Cozy " brand floor furnace. Pilot light lights. Gas valve will not open for burner flame. It is not the thermostat unless the wires to the thermostat have beome disconnected between the thermostat and the gas valve. Have already gone around thermostat. I used to work on "boilers" so am some what acquainted on how the furnace is supposed to work. If I go arond the 2 Limit disk, I then believe I either have some broke wires or something is wrong with the gas valve itself. What do you think?

I have a 94 Buick Regal GS 3.8vl engine, and I recently got the oil changed. The mechanic added 4 1/2 quarts to my car. I added a bottle of Lucas Oil Stabilizer to the motor also... I think it was a quart also. When I check my dip stick... the oil level is about a quarter of an inch past the very top oil line. What harm will that do?

I've had a slow leak in my tire for about 9 months now. I just keep refilling it every other week.

It never would get so low that the rim would touch the ground and I was just putting off the inevitable.

But I didn't drive my car all week and when I went to drive it today it was totally flat (right to the rim). I put on the spare but I'm wondering whether I can still salvage the tire or not.

What do you guys suggest? I'd like to avoid having to buy a new full set of tires.

My car (98 Toyota Corolla VE) makes a weird noise when speeding from 0-30mph and takes engine oil every twice a week. I am tired to spending money on engine oil all the time...and the noise....It just burns an oil...so i went to mechanics to diagnose my engine. They told me there's a problem with a engine gasket or head cover gasket....i saw smoke was coming out when he pressed the accelerator too much....!
He gave me an estimation of $780 with included $650+ Tax labor charge and remaining charge for replace of gasket. The time for maintenance is 10 to 12 hrs. They were telling me that its a hectic process to take out the gasket and make it dry....!!

I need help from somebody who's expert in car maintenance. I want to know if that's true about the labor charge....and all or he's trying to fool me?
