We have a 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan. Check engine light came on today. Took it to Advance Auto and had them read it with their computer thing. The guy said it was the transmission solenoid.

It's the holidays and we have children so we really don't have money to fix it right away. Our van is running just fine. It shifts fine, it doesn't get hot or anything out of the ordinary.

Is it ok to drive to the store, my husband drives to work about 15 miles away. We don't plan on any long distance driving until we get this fixed.

1.Is it ok to drive???
2. How long will this problem hold out??
3. If it is ok to drive, what should we look for on the first sign on trouble?
4. If the "solenoid" does "go out"..what happens?? It will not ruin the tranny, will it? What probs will it cause?

Thanks!! Please on Mechanics reply!!!

Happy Holidays!!

It will probably be ok to drive, but it won't shift right and your overdrive will likely be out.
It's often just wires knocked off, but if it's really bad a new solenoid pack is about $150 plus an hours labor.
Do not let some clown try to disassemble and repair the solenoid pack. Spring for a new one.

Here's the trouble. The transmission is controlled totally by solenoids. Lots and lots of them. Which one is doing to fail? We don't know.

If they all fail, you'll still have 2nd gear and reverse. That's not a bad risk, really.

Try this first disconnect the negative battery cable for about ten minutes and see if the problem goes away. It sounds like a gost code if the van is runing fine.
