or does it need replacing? When i tap on the housing it tries to spin, then slows down and quits. Winter approches and i am at a loss.........help would be appreciated. Thank-you!

Not likely. It probably a sealed unit. Besides, it's electrical & you don't want fluids in there shorting it out. You need to just replace it. The electrical bushing are bad.

Previous answer is exactly right. If you want to be on the cheap side though(like I) you can waste more time and try to find the bushings and possible the bearings and rebuild it. time consuming, but cheaper.......then you just have to hope the windings are not bad or going to go bad anytime soon.

I doubt lubing it will help it, the motor is going bad. You can get that at any parts store for 35 dollars and install it yourself in ten minutes.

It wouldn't help for long. First, try the fan on high speed. If it works there, but not at lower speeds, it's the motor resistor that's bad.
