Maintenance & Repairs - October 2007

I bought a 1989 Nissan Maxima. I drove the car with no problems for 6 months. The timing belt went out on the car on the highway. I had the car towed and the timing belt replaced. The mechanic informed me that the valves were bent. I wanted to know if I should have the whole engine replaced, or if it's worth rebuilding the engine that is there. The car still runs, but it runs hard and it's very loud. I couldn't take the mechanics word, because he just kept wanting me to sell him the car for a few hundred dollars. I don't know if he's telling me to sell the car because it's really worthless. Or if he just wants my car!

The right side of the floor mate gets very wet after it rains and it takes a long time to dry out the felt matting underneath. In the mean time the wind shield fogs up and the defrosters have to be run most of the time. I've check all the windows and door seals and poored water down the air in take below the windshield. No leaks were found. If you have an idea where the water is coming from, please answer. It's worth 10 points and my most grateful thanks.

Hi i just bought a 2004 Grand prix GT2. The guy said that it had a supercharger. My car is been showing the engine light and overheats and shuts off. The dealer cannot tell what the problem is. I read somewhere that it could be the supercharger oil. Can anyone tell me how i can make sure my car has a supercharger, and how to replace the oil.

Golf 3, 1993 model, diesel radiator fan not working. Now, with a light tester I conected the positve terminal of the battery to the Fan negative wire and i got light, I then connected the positive terminal of the thermoswitch socket to the negative therminal of the battery and i got light, I then bridge the thermo-switch connector red wire and the red/black wire and the fan turned ( I have changed the thermoswitch yet it did not work) I then bridge the thermo-switch connector wire to the red/white wire and i got a blown fuse. Again, when the fan turns it makes little squeaking sound and its turn couples of times freely and it will seize, when i turn the blade with my hand it was stiff as if its binding. I suspect the fan is bad and has broken the new thermo-switch; Doe any one have Idea what I am missing or needed to be done before I change the fan and thermo switch? and did the fuse blow as a result of wrong connection or its normal or the high speed system is causing the entire prob?

I've had this issue before (see my other questions). I have a 2001 Xterra I swear has a windshield made of inferior glass. For years I've had two major problems: One, the wipers were always streaky, even when brand new. Two, the glass always (especially when wet) looked like it was greasy, or like a glass shower door. I first cleaned it off thoroughly with rubbing alcohol. Then I used bug/tar/grease remover. Then I bought new wiper blades. It seemed to do the trick
My problem is this: Although the wipers now wipe streak-free, after a rainstorm my windshield looks like that old shower door. It doesn't clean with the wipers. It only goes away when the windshield is totally dry.
Now I think that the crap on there is improved since the rubbing alcohol and bug/tar remover. However, that stuff I used could eat through steel, so I don't know if this is an issue of stuff on the surface. Could it be the surface of the glass itself is bad? What can I do?

Could the engine be damaged if a car was driven with very low oil level. Car seems fine, no noises etc or would the engine just seize if there was a problem?

I input all my details for the mailing purposes, I use to enquire the Battery Replacement Last July 18, 2007 and since from that date up to now i haven't recieved the replace battery i use to enquire again but it say that the Battery was already sent out last July 19. Now my question is, how come that up to now i haven't recieved the said Battery? Should we wait till my battery will exploded? Hope to hear your answer to my question.

My car is doing my head in! I have had it in the garage twice now. I have had the fuel filter changed then the pipes blown through. It is a chrysler voyager LS. As soon as i get to half a tank of petrol it starts to lose power then stops . If you wait a while it goes again for a bit. Also a couple of times, after it has conked out, the exhaust has blown back. Please someone give me a clue to whats wrong? I cant afford a new car as i have 5 kids and 15 weeks pregnant with my 6th and i need my car as two of my kids have problems so i need it for hospital appointments. I cant keep shelling out money and its still not right. Thanks

A oil change was done to my 02 Saturn, about 3 weeks ago by a gas station mechanic. Tonite driving home from work (late nite with little traffic, maybe a 15 minute ride) the oil light came on. About a mile from my house the car became very sluggish. It did not stall out and the oil light would only come on when I would stop for a light. I did make it home OK but the last half mile the car felt like it did not want to go over 30 miles an hour. I know the car probably needs a thermostat. My questions are is it possible the mechanic did not put enough oil in it or is it related to the thermostat or something else entirely. Is it safe to drive to a gas station to have it looked at? Any help would be appreciated, I need my car for work. THANKS!!!

I Bought a used 89 ford festiva for $500, just to get around town. The car was running until after I changed the spark plugs and wires. After changing the spark plugs and the wires it ran fine then after a good 20 minutes on the road it stalled on me. It was if It had ran out of gas, only the gas tank was full. The ignition and the battery are fine it's just that the engine will not turn over, any ideas?

I have a 92 Cadillac Deville, and the only problem with it is that it turns off sometimes. It can go a while before it turns off.....or sometimes it'll turn off then 5 min later turn off again. When it turns off I don't have a problem with cranking it back up....cranks up perfectly. One thing about when it turns off is that the Charge Battery and Change Oil light will come on.
